Why we built Analytical Ledger

Updates

The books stop getting done the moment the business gets busy — which is exactly when knowing your numbers matters most. That kept happening to us, so we built the tool we needed.

TL;DR

Why did we build another accounting app?

Because the ones we tried made us choose between running the business and knowing where it stood. Spreadsheets broke once they got big and never enforced double-entry. Subscription tools charged every month for features we half-used, charged again per company, and made the data feel rented. So we built the tool we actually wanted to use.

The wall is always the same. Work picks up, the bookkeeping slides, and a month later there's a pile of unreconciled statements and a quiet dread: did we make money last month? Being behind on the books is normal and fixable — but only if the tool makes catching up fast, and only if you can trust the numbers once you're caught up.

What is Analytical Ledger?

Analytical Ledger is a real double-entry accounting and budgeting system for small businesses, with personal finances treated as a first-class entity. It's a web app you can self-host with embedded Postgres — no Docker, no admin install — or run in your own cloud on Vercel and Neon. One DATABASE_URL swap moves between them.

Correctness is the whole point. Money is stored as exact decimals, never floating point. Every journal entry must balance, and that rule is enforced twice — once in the application and again by database triggers. Posted entries are immutable; you correct them with reversing entries, the way real accounting works. The numbers are either right or the entry doesn't post.

Free, and yours to keep

There is no monthly fee and no per-entity charge. Run every company and your personal finances in one place, see them consolidated with intercompany flows netted out, and export to CSV and QBO whenever you want. Nobody holds your books hostage.

The source is being prepared for open-source release. Until then it's free to use and your data is yours to keep. Donations are welcomed to fund continued development — they help the project keep moving, but they're never required and never a paywall.

We run our own books on it

This isn't a demo we spun up for a launch. Analytical Solutions keeps its own group of companies — and its personal finances — on Analytical Ledger, daily, in production. When a report is wrong, we feel it before anyone else does. That's the standard the correctness guarantees are held to: our own month-end.

What people get wrong about "free"

The usual worry is that free means worse, or that the real bill arrives later. Here it doesn't. Analytical Ledger is free because it was built to run our own companies first, not to convert a trial into a subscription. There's no upsell tier holding back the reports you need, no meter on how many entities you add. The honest limits are the real ones: it's USD-only and a web app, not a native mobile app.

What's on the road to open source

The near-term work is the same work that makes the books trustworthy: hardening the correctness guarantees, smoothing the bank import, and getting the source ready to release under an open license. We're not putting dates on the site — we'd rather ship it right than promise it early. Project updates land here in the Updates category as they happen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Analytical Ledger really free?

Yes. There's no monthly fee, no per-entity charge, and no trial that expires into a bill. It was built to run our own group of companies, and it's offered to the community as a gift. Donations are welcomed to fund continued development, but they're optional and never gate any feature.

Is Analytical Ledger open source?

Not yet — the source is being prepared for open-source release. Today it's free to use and your data is yours to keep. When the license lands, we'll say so here in the Updates category. We won't claim it's open source before it actually is.

Can I keep my own data and self-host it?

Yes. Self-host with embedded Postgres — no Docker, no admin install — or run it in your own cloud on Vercel and Neon, switched by a single DATABASE_URL. Export to CSV and QBO anytime. It's your data on your infrastructure, not ours.

Do I need to be an accountant to use it?

No. It's built for owners doing their own books, not for accountants. A 118-account best-practice chart of accounts is already set up and mapped to IRS Schedule C and Form 1120, and AI-assisted import proposes categories for you to approve — the machine does the tedium, you keep the judgment.

See the whole system

The fastest way to understand Analytical Ledger is to see what it actually does. Walk the tour of the modules to see how import, reconcile, the ledger, and reports fit together — then decide whether it's the tool that finally keeps you caught up.
