3120Install
Four steps, no installer required.
The portable edition runs from any folder you can write to. You do not need Node.js, PostgreSQL, Azure or a developer checkout.
Step 1
Download
Get the Windows x64 portable ZIP from the release assets. Windows 10 or 11 and Microsoft Edge are required for the app window.
Step 2
Extract and open
Extract into a new folder and open
Analytical Ledger.exe. Unsigned files can trigger a Windows reputation warning.Step 3
Open the setup link
The first launch creates a private local database and opens a one-time setup link. Use it to create your owner account.
Step 4
Onboard
Follow onboarding to set up your first entity. Close the app window to stop the server and the database; open it again and your data is there.
Keep the setup link private. Until an owner exists, anyone holding it can claim the installation. Once an owner exists, setup is disabled.
One user, one machine. The app and its database listen only on your computer's loopback address. It is a single-user desktop install, not a server for other computers. For a team, self-host or request hosting.
Preview The Windows distribution, password sign-in and onboarding are in Preview. An optional per-user installer adds a Start menu shortcut, needs no elevation and creates no service.
3130Your data
One folder. All of it yours.
Everything that changes lives in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Analytical Ledger, readable only by your Windows user. Your books are not sent to us.
- postgres\
- The database cluster, with your books.
- documents\
- Receipts, bills and statements you attach.
- secrets.json
- Generated local database and application keys. Keep it private.
- backups\
- Timestamped upgrade backups, each with a verification receipt.
- logs\
- Launcher, database, application and browser diagnostics.
- edge-profile\
- The dedicated browser profile for the app window.
Move it whole. Keep the complete folder together, including secrets.json. Losing the credentials key makes saved integration credentials unreadable.
Avoid network shares and synced live folders. A cloud-synced live database directory is not safe. Set the LEDGER_STATE_HOME variable to use another local directory, and use the same value every time you launch or stop the app.
3140Upgrades and backups
Backed up and verified before it migrates.
An upgrade does not migrate your only copy. The new version proves itself on a copy first.
How to upgrade
Close the app. Extract the new ZIP into a new folder, keep the old one until the upgrade succeeds, and launch it. Use the same data folder. Never extract over the old version.
What it does first
When the app version changes it takes a database backup, restores it into a scratch database, checks that posted entries balance, and migrates only that copy. It switches over only after that passes, and the old database stays in the cluster.
If it fails
It stops and leaves your old database intact. Read the logs before you retry, and do not delete or reset the data folder.
What a backup covers. Upgrade backups cover the database, not your documents or the credentials key. For a full copy, close the app and copy the whole data folder to encrypted storage you control. There is no scheduled or off-machine backup in the Windows package, so keep your own and test a restore now and then. A managed instance backs up nightly for you.
3150Agents, stopping and removal
Connect an agent. Remove it cleanly.
Your agent
A tool on the same computer can connect to the app and read your books with a scope you grant. The address can change on each launch, so use the one shown in the app window. Preview
If it will not start
Look in logs\supervisor.log and the matching database, application or browser log. Do not share secrets.json, the browser profile or a setup link when you ask for help.
Uninstall
Removing the application keeps your data. Delete the data folder only when you mean to remove every account, document, key and backup for good.
